Description - This is a stunning vintage Escorcia 950 sterling silver necklace. This wonderful necklace is masterfully crafted in a classically elegant motif that has a wonderful art nouveau look. Escorcia used many of Matl like designs in their pieces. The necklace features a serpent head as the clasp. The serpent head, as with much Matl jewelry, is decorated with applied wire and embossed.
It also has three lovely amethysts, four turquoise stones and two coral stones. The colors of the stones match almost perfectly and are all tight in their settings.
The body of the necklace(serpent) resembles scales and is. Made of sterling silver coiled wire.
The 950 purity of the silver means it has 95% silver as opposed to 92.5% (925 silver). Having more silver makes it softer and easier to work with. Size - The necklace is 17" long (including the closure) and 1/2" wide at the scales. The serpent closure is 1 3/4" long and 7/8" wide.
Weight is approximately 102 grams. Hallmarked - It is fully hallmarked. The T marks were introduced in the 1970's. The T stands for Taxco and the P for the silversmith's name. This hallmark is shown on pages 63 and 268 in Bille Hougart's book The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks.Condition - Excellent vintage condition - no dents or dings to the silverwork. The stones are in perfect condition. There are minor surface scratches in the silver consistent with loving wear and age (and actually desirable on vintage pieces). Note: I have looked at much of the Matl copies and the Escorcia is the most well made with quality stones. Also, there is an original Matl for sale now that is very similar to this necklace.
